Lecture Synopsis

Lecture One:

What does it mean to be made in the image of God.

Theological exploration of key biblical texts that speak about being made in God’s image and, as Christians, having Christ living in us and us being ‘hidden in Him’.

  • How is the image of God reflected in every human being, whether they know God or not?
  • What implications does this have for the way we should treat each other, and particularly they way we nurture and teach young people?

Dr Crispin Fletcher-Louis

Lecture Two:

Societal Sin

In what ways do the systemic structures and values of our society create a toxic environment for young people?

  • Why do some media outlets seem so keen to portray young people in a negative light?
  • How do we view the young?
  • What are the pressures that are exerted on young people that are in direct conflict with the values of God’s kingdom? (Appearance, achievement, success…)
  • How does social deprivation affect a young person’s view of themselves as well as limit their opportunity to flourish?

Nigel Pimlott

Lecture Three:

The sexualisation of young people

‘Sexualisation is the imposition of adult sexuality on to children and young people before they are capable of dealing with it, mentally, emotionally or physically.’ Home Office Report

  • In what ways are young people sexualised inappropriately?
  • How has this escalated in recent years – for example, access to pornography, pornification of culture?
  • What effect does this have on young people’s view of themselves and of each other?
  • How can youth workers help young people to develop a healthy sexuality?
